Braces for adults

By Dr. med. dent. Dana Marinescu, dentist for digital dentistry and modern orthodontics

Braces for adults are becoming increasingly common. In my practice in Zurich, I meet adults over 30 every day who are interested in straightening their teeth – whether for aesthetic or functional reasons. And that's wonderful! Because with today's technology, orthodontic treatment is more discreet, comfortable, and efficient than ever before.

In this article, I'd like to show you what options you have as an adult in Zurich, how treatment works, what it costs, and what you should keep in mind. And yes, I'll also share a few encouraging anecdotes from my daily practice.

Why do adults choose braces?

Late corrections are normal today

Many adults come to me and say, "I've always wanted to do this, but only now do I have the courage and the opportunity." Others report that their teeth have shifted over time—often unnoticed until they notice it in photos or while brushing their teeth.

A 39-year-old patient, a marketing manager from Zurich, once told me: "I never smile with my mouth open in photos. I want to change that—not for others, but for myself." And that's precisely the point: Braces for adults aren't a vanity, but an investment in one's own well-being.

Reasons for braces for adults

  • Relapse after early orthodontic treatment
  • Newly developed misalignments due to tooth loss or displacement
  • Functional problems such as jaw joint problems, grinding or speech problems
  • Improve aesthetics and self-confidence

And of course, there are also medical reasons: crooked teeth are more difficult to clean, which increases the risk of tooth decay and periodontitis.

Which braces are suitable for adults?

Braces for adults no longer automatically mean "metal in the mouth." Technology has advanced enormously, and you have a variety of discreet, everyday options available in Zurich.

Invisible braces (Aligners, e.g. Invisalign)

  • Transparent, removable plastic rails
  • Barely visible in everyday life
  • Particularly popular with working people
  • Digital 3D planning with simulation of the final result

I remember a 45-year-old entrepreneur who was worried about lisp in meetings. After two days, she responded: "No one noticed—not even my husband."

Ceramic brackets (tooth-colored fixed braces)

  • Function like classic metal braces, but visually more discreet
  • Well suited for more complex tooth movements
  • Fixed in the mouth, therefore less dependent on discipline than with aligners

Many patients choose this option if they want a stable and permanent correction but do not want to forego aesthetics.

Lingual technique (braces behind the teeth)

  • Completely invisible from the outside
  • Sits on the inside of the teeth
  • Ideal for demanding aesthetic expectations
  • Some getting used to in the first few weeks

An architect from Zurich wore lingual braces for 18 months – not a single colleague ever noticed. Now that's an understatement!

Classic metal braces

  • Technically very effective
  • Usually not the first choice for adults, but economically interesting
  • Recommended for complex misalignments

The process: How your braces treatment in Zurich works

1. Non-binding initial consultation

We begin with a conversation: What's bothering you, what's your goal? Then we create a digital 3D scan model of your teeth and a panoramic X-ray. This allows us to determine exactly which tooth movements are possible and appropriate.

2. Individual planning with digital preview

Thanks to modern software, you can see what your smile will look like before treatment even begins. This is not only fascinating, but also helps you decide on the right method.

3. Start of treatment

Whether you choose braces or brackets, we'll provide you with close support, answer your questions, and adjust your treatment regularly. Follow-up appointments every 4–6 weeks are standard.

Many of my adult patients appreciate that we can schedule these appointments flexibly – even early in the morning or after work.

4. Retention: The most important step after

After active tooth movement is complete, the retention phase begins: a phase in which the teeth are stabilized. Here, we use retainers or wires, which are often permanent.

Without retention, the teeth would shift again. I always explain this by comparing it to a rubber band: something that has been under tension for a long time will want to return to its original shape.

How much does braces cost for adults in Zurich?

Costs vary depending on the method, complexity and duration of treatment.

Guidelines from my practice:

  • Invisalign/Aligners: CHF 3,500–9,000
  • Ceramic brackets: CHF 5,000–8,000
  • Lingual technique: CHF 8,000–12,000
  • Metal braces: CHF 4,000–6,500

During your initial consultation, you'll receive a detailed quote detailing all services. We also offer flexible installment payments—many adults take advantage of this.

Is braces for adults covered by health insurance?

Unfortunately, basic insurance doesn't cover this, as orthodontic treatments for adults are considered "non-essential." Some supplemental insurance plans cover part of the costs—it's best to check with your insurance provider directly.

Common Concerns: Honestly Answered

Am I too old for braces?

No! I've treated patients between the ages of 30 and 65. It's never too late to do something for yourself.

How noticeable are braces in everyday life?

With aligners or lingual braces, it's not noticeable at all. Even ceramic brackets are barely noticeable. Many colleagues and friends simply don't notice.

Does that hurt?

Pressure, yes, pain, no. Most people get used to it within a few days. I recommend soft food to start with and, if necessary, a mild painkiller.

Will this affect my professional life?

Not really. Speaking, eating, traveling—everything remains manageable. Many of my patients travel a lot for work and manage the treatment without any problems.

Advantages of dental correction in adulthood

  • self-consciousness: Finally smile carefree
  • function: Better chewing, less tension, healthier bite
  • Health: Easier dental care, lower risk of caries and periodontitis
  • Long-term stability: Prevention of tooth migration and loss

Many report that they feel “new” after the treatment – both inside and out.

Why you should get your braces done in Zurich

  • Central location and excellent accessibility
  • Modern facilities with 3D scanner, digital planning, app support
  • Personal support instead of assembly line medicine
  • Experience with adults: I specialize in adults with high aesthetic and professional demands

Conclusion: Braces for adults? Absolutely!

Whether you travel a lot for work, are in the middle of family life, or simply want to do something for yourself: braces as an adult are a big step towards a better quality of life.
