In fact, more and more people over 30 are coming to my practice in Zurich because they need their wisdom teeth removed. Inflammation, pain, or even cysts often only appear later in life. In this article, as an experienced dentist, I would like to give you an insight into the process of wisdom tooth removal, what costs you can expect, and how you can best support the healing process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When do I need to have my wisdom teeth removed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Also an issue beyond 30<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I often hear phrases like, &quot;I thought only teenagers did that?&quot; But the truth is: Wisdom teeth can cause lifelong problems. Many of my older patients suddenly experience gum inflammation, pressure, or even jaw pain. The reason is usually that the wisdom teeth are partially erupting or are pressing on neighboring teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Typical complaints in adulthood<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recurrent inflammation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain when chewing or opening the mouth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Crowding or displacement of the front teeth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Formation of cysts or deep pockets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A patient of mine, a 42-year-old sports teacher, suffered from diffuse pain in his lower jaw for months. Only a 3D X-ray revealed that his partially erupted wisdom tooth was crooked in the bone and pressing on the nerve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When is surgery really necessary?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed. The key is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are there any acute complaints?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is there a risk to the neighboring teeth?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is the tooth free of caries and healthy?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In my practice in Zurich, we use digital volume tomography (DVT) to precisely assess the position of the tooth and what risks exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The procedure: Wisdom teeth removal in Zurich<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 1: Initial consultation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At your first appointment, we&#039;ll discuss your concerns and take a digital x-ray or 3D image. You&#039;ll receive a detailed consultation\u2014including information about risks, alternatives, and the healing process. Many of my patients appreciate the relaxed atmosphere and open dialogue. In most cases, local anesthesia is sufficient. Thanks to state-of-the-art technology and very fine instruments, the procedure is minimally invasive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 3: The procedure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On the day of surgery, you will receive a local anesthetic. The procedure itself takes between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on the location and number of teeth involved. I use piezosurgery, a particularly gentle ultrasound technique that minimally damages the surrounding tissue. This means less pain and faster healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a 38-year-old patient was terrified of the procedure. After the operation, she laughed and said, &quot;It wasn&#039;t that bad. I expected more from the dentist visit!&quot;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 4: Follow-up and monitoring<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After the procedure, you will receive an ice pack, pain medication, and personalized aftercare instructions. After 3\u20135 days, we will monitor wound healing. However, some supplemental insurance plans cover part of the costs. It&#039;s worth checking with your insurance provider beforehand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Please have us certify the medical necessity if you wish to submit a claim for reimbursement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Healing: What really helps after wisdom teeth removal?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The first 48 hours<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cool:<\/strong> Best with gel packs, 20 minutes each with breaks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Protection:<\/strong> No sports, no office, no stress<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Soft food:<\/strong> Soups, porridge, yogurt, nothing hot<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do not smoke or drink:<\/strong> Alcohol and nicotine massively delay healing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The next few days<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rinse your mouth gently with chamomile or chlorhexidine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brush your teeth normally, but avoid the sore areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid dairy products for the first few days (lactic acid bacteria can irritate the wound)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What to do if you have pain?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mild pain is normal. Dafalgan or ibuprofen are usually sufficient. If the pain increases, we will immediately check for secondary inflammation (e.g., alveolitis).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A particularly positive effect: We often use PRF (Platelet Rich Fibrin). This is extracted from your own blood and inserted into the wound. It significantly accelerates healing.
